Troopers from the Marion Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol are investigating a fatal crash that occurred on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at approximately 2:15 p.m. on State Route 529 near Salem Road in Richland Township.
The crash involved a 2000 white Chevrolet 1500 driven by Ike Stephens Jr., 54, of Ashley, Ohio and a 2015 gray Dodge Grand Caravan driven by John W. Nagel, 56, of Marion, Ohio.
Investigators said the Chevrolet was traveling eastbound on State Route 529 and the Dodge was traveling westbound on State Route 529. The Chevrolet went off the right side of the road, overcorrected crossing the center line and struck the Dodge head on. The Dodge went off the right side of the road and came to rest in the ditch. The Chevrolet rotated and came to rest facing westbound in the westbound lane.
The Patrol said Nagel was wearing his seatbelt and was trapped in his vehicle and was freed by mechanical means. Nagel was transported to Marion General Hospital with life threatening injuries. Stephens Jr. was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected.
Coroner Dr. Marc Comianos pronounced Stephens deceased at the scene.
Fort Morrow, 1st Consolidated Fire Department and First Advance ambulance assisted on the scene.
The crash remains under investigation.
