Lawmakers approve Ohio Sales Tax Holiday for back-to-school items

Ohio consumers will again get a back-to-school sales tax break on clothing, school supplies and instructional materials in August.

The Ohio House and Senate on Wednesday approved the third annual sales tax holiday for Aug. 4-6. The bill cleared the House in a 92-1 vote and the Senate in a 30-1 vote.

If Gov. John Kasich signs the bill, clothing and shoes priced at $75 or less and school supplies or instructional materials that cost $20 or less will be exempt from state and local sales tax on those days.

The exemption applies to purchases from brick and mortar stores and online retailers.

The state expects to lose $14.7 million in tax revenue from the sales tax holiday, according to analysis by the nonpartisan Legislative Service Commission. The local government and library fund would see $500,000 less and transit authorities would lose $3.7 million.
