Troopers from the Marion Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol are investigating a fatal crash that occurred Saturday, June 17, 2017 at 9:04 PM on State Route 98 near milepost 15 in Scott Township, Marion County.
The crash involved a 2017 Harley Davidson driven by Paul W. Hollinger, age 50. Investigators said Mr. Hollinger and his wife, Cheryl A. Hollinger, age 60, both of Powell, Ohio, were traveling south on State Route 98 when a deer attempted to cross the roadway. The motorcycle struck the deer, went off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected, slid off the left side of the road, and came to rest in a ditch.
Both husband and wife were transported to Marion General Hospital and Mrs. Hollinger succumbed to her injuries while undergoing care.
The Patrol said that neither rider was wearing a helmet and alcohol is not suspected to be a factor.
Marion County Sheriff’s Department, Marion Township EMS, First Consolidated EMS, were on scene to assist.
The crash remains under investigation.
