Former state Rep. Connie Pillich announced Thursday that Marion Mayor Scott Schertzer would join her ticket as her running mate.
Schertzer was a public school teacher and previously worked in the offices of then-Secretary of State Sherrod Brown and Treasurer Mary Ellen Withrow. He was elected mayor of Marion in 2007, the first Democrat elected to the seat since the 1980s.
“I bring a teacher’s background in understanding public education in the state of Ohio and what we can do to make it better,” Schertzer said in an interview with cleveland.com. “I think I understand the needs, the wants and the concerns of rural voters. Many of their concerns are the same as in urban areas.”
Marion Mayor Scott Schertzer will run as former State Rep. Connie Pillich’s running mate.
Schertzer said he’s known Pillich for about four years and found her gubernatorial pitch compelling.
“I liked Connie’s 88-county approach,” Schertzer said. “As she’s been out and I’ve been out we’ve recognized there are communities that have been forgotten by Columbus and Washington.”
Schertzer added he thought the crowded Democratic primary was good for the governor’s race.
Schertzer has two daughters and said he hoped to be part of history with Pillich, who is the lone woman candidate in the Democratic race and would become the first elected woman governor in the state should she win.
