Robert E. “Bob” Garey, age 80, formerly of E. Center St., Marion, died Monday evening, April 26, 2010, at the Kingston Residence.
On August 31, 1929, Bob was born in Marion, Ohio, the son of the late Howard “H.R.” and Martha (Schupback) Garey. He graduated from Marion Harding High School in the Class of 1947, later attended Ohio State University for over three years.
In 1951, Bob enlisted into the U. S. Army to join his fellow soldiers in the fight of the Korean Conflict.
Upon his honorable discharge, Bob returned to Marion, where he met his beloved wife, Roberta Bumgarner, whom he married on August 17, 1957, at the Emanuel Lutheran Church. Together they shared over fifty one years of marriage, until she preceded him in death on November 1, 2008.
An electrician by trade, Bob worked diligently for the Triple Service Electrician Company, Owens Electric Service, and most recently for the IBEW Union Hall.
A lifelong resident of Marion, Bob was a faithful member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church, where he had been baptized as a child. Also, he was a member of the Masonic Lodge #70, American Legion, and the Moose.
With a love for bowling, Bob bowled in countless leagues over the years with his wife, Roberta, and he even managed to achieve rolling a perfect game of “300” in tournament play.
Enjoying a challenge, Bob often would be found putting together large model airplanes or he would be using macramé to build anything you could think of, such as tables, lamps and cradles out of string.
Bob will be missed by his two children: Howard Garey of Breman, Ohio, and Sheila (Sam) Hundley of Marion, Ohio; eight grandchildren: Walter (Angel) Hundley, Scott (fiancé Amy Phillips) Hundley, Amanda (Nick) Miller, Lisa Garey, and Christopher Garey; and ten great grandchildren.
Including his wife and parents, Bob was preceded in death by his sister, Marilyn Garey Weobkenburg Poore.
Bob’s family will greet friends from 4 – 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 29, 2010, at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 E. Center St., Marion, where Masonic services will follow immediately at 7:00 p.m. Services celebrating his life will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. Burial with military honors provided by the Marion County United Veterans Council will follow in Marion Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research or the National Parkinson’s Foundation, and they may be sent in care of the funeral home.
