S. Rex Hogsett, age 72, of Marion , died unexpectedly early Tuesday morning, April 6, 2010, at his residence.
On July 11, 1937, Rex was born in Seebert , West Virginia , the son of the late Charles F. and Mary (Grimes) Hogsett. He went on to graduate from Hillsboro High School in West Virginia.
Soon after graduation, Rex visited his brother, Ed, who was working for the Marion Power Shovel. Rex quickly found work during his visit to Marion with Fairfield Engineering, and he then decided to make Marion his home. He worked in the shop of Fairfield Engineering from 1956 until he retired in 2004.
Rex married Sandy Jackson on October 12, 1963, in Marion, and they were happily married for forty six years.
Dedicated to his church, Rex was a faithful member of the Crosswood United Methodist Church and formerly of the Calvary United Methodist Church.
To those he touched, Rex will likely be remembered for his great sense of humor. Whether through just joking around or laughing with his friends, he found much enjoyment by looking at the light-hearted side of things and he was always finding ways to make others laugh.
Rex was a self-taught craftsman with a natural ability to create and fix most anything. A perfectionist's perfectionist, everything he did received his full attention until each detail was complete. His craftsmanship was well known throughout his community whether it was small job or a major renovation. Always hard at work on one of many projects, the family has been touched by the many community members expressing pride in the fact that he had done work for them. Whether it was a house from the ground up or a grandfather clock, no job was complete until he stood back with his hands in his pockets and said, "Now that doesn't look too bad, does it?!"
A car aficionado, Rex “liked old cars, he liked new cars, and he liked NASCAR.” His true pride and joy was his 1970 Cadillac, which he always kept primed and ready to hit the open road.
A loving husband and father, Rex will be dearly missed by his wife, Sandy Hogsett of Marion; three children: Teri (Michael) Ritterbush of El Paso, Texas, and their daughter, Itzel (Al) Lemanczyk; Michael (Rachel) Hogsett of Galena, and their daughter, Andi Hogsett; and Steven (Christine) Hogsett of Haymarket , Virginia ; three great-grandchildren: Caleb, Lexi and Ava Lemanczyk; a sister, Virginia Irvine of Woodbridge , Virginia ; and too many dear friends to be able to mention them all.
Including his parents, Rex was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Edward Hogsett.
The Hogsett family will greet friends from 4 – 7 p.m. on Friday, April 9, 2010, at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 E. Center St. , Marion . Services celebrating his life will be held on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the Crosswood United Methodist Church, 1551 Richland Rd. , Marion , with Pastor Ryan Chivington officiating. Burial will follow in Marion Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Crosswood United Methodist Church.
