Richard R. Parthemore, 91, of Marion

Richard R. Parthemore, age 91, of Marion, passed away late Wednesday night, May 12, 2010, at Marion Manor Nursing Residence after a long battle with heart disease.

He was born February 16, 1919, in Mount Gilead, Ohio, the son of the late Clyde C. and Florence Bell (Webb) Parthemore.

He graduated in 1937 from Mt. Gilead High School and joined the Civilian Conservation Corp for a time before volunteering for the Navy in June 1940.  He served aboard the newly commissioned submarine, USS Baleo, early on, but later transferred to the LCI and LST ships working in the Pacific Theater during WWII.

After mustering out in California, in July of 1946, he worked his way back home across the Western States.

He married the love of his life, Anna G. (Slob) Parthemore, on May 30, 1948, in Marion.  She preceded him in death in 1997.

Anna and Richard relished family life including camping, boating, fishing, and other sporting activities.

Richard was active for several years in the Masonic Lodge #653 and the Marion Moose Lodge.

He worked many years at the Alloy Cast Steel where he spent his time welding and assembling.  He retired from Patent Scaffolding Company Marion Division after 15 years of service.

A man of deep faith Richard was a member of the Prospect Street United Methodist Church.

Richard is survived by his three children: L. Diane (Jack) Freeman, Wanda R. (Richard) Thorpe, Donald D. ( Janis Seckel) Parthemore; nine grandchildren: Kyle (Carol) Freeman, Bret (Regina) Freeman, Edwina Harris-Freeman, Andrew and Joel Thorpe, Sara (Matthew) Axline, Lori (James) Peterson, Ryan (Allison Walker) Parthemore, and Jena Parthemore (fiancé Brandon Beaver) ;  twelve great-grandchildren, and one sister: Rose (Harry) Arnold.

In addition to his mother, father, and wife, he was preceded in death by his grandson: Troy E. Freeman; his friend and step-father: Donald M. Slane;  his step-mother: Edith Parthemore; siblings: Wanda (Robert) Vaughn and Paul D. Slane; and special uncle: Charles VanSickle, with whom he lived during his formative years.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 16, 2010, at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 E. Center St., Marion, from 12-3:30 p.m. where a Masonic service will follow at 3:30 p.m.

Service celebrating his life will be held on Monday at the Prospect Street United Methodist Church, 185 South Prospect St., Marion. At 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Joe Miller officiating.  Burial will follow at Chapel Heights Memory Gardens with Military Honors being provided by the Marion County United Veterans Council.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Church, or to Marion Manor Nursing Home, 195 Executive Drive, Marion.
