Lester Dennis Daugherty, 97, formerly of Prospect

Lester Dennis Daugherty, 97, of Sun City, AZ, passed away at the home of his daughter and son-in-law in Sun City West, AZ September 4, 2010.

He was born February 22, 1913, in West Virginia, to the late William O. and Juanita (Rayburn) Daugherty.

He married Maxine Vivian Bowles, November 5, 1932 and she preceded him in death on August 2, 2004 after 71 ½ years of marriage.

Lester moved to Ohio in 1937 and lived in Morrow County for 10 years before moving to Prospect in 1947.  He resided there until 1999 when he and Maxine relocated to Sun City, AZ.

He had worked on a dairy farm, was a skilled machinist and worked at Curtis Wright Corporation in Columbus building fighter planes during World War II.  He lastly worked at the Prospect Farmers Exchange Co. in Prospect where he became manager and completed 29 years in that position.  He took his family to Yellowstone National Park in 1953 and fell in love with the West where he travelled over the years before settling there.  He had travelled to all of the 48 States, all of the Canadian Provinces and Mexico.  He loved puttering around on his farms and loved music.  He passed the love of music on to his family.  His greatest joy was spending time with his family and, occasionally participating in a songfest.

While in Prospect, he was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ, Knights of Pythias and served on the Prospect Light Board.

Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Thomas Knickel, daughter, Pauline Oehler, all of Sun City West and Dr. Carolyn Daugherty and husband Dr. Robert Mathiasen of Sedona, AZ.  He also is survived by three grandchildren, Cheryl Oehler of Sun City, AZ, Kimberly (David) Hoffman of Litchfield Park, AZ and Russell (Catherine) Oehler of Tigard, OR.  His great grandchildren are Ian Hoffman, Justin, Greyson and Dominic Oehler.  Also surviving is his brother, William W. Daugherty of Lincolnton, NC.  His sister, Juanita Hartley of Huntington WV recently passed away.  He was preceded in death by nine sisters and brothers.

He was a very loving husband and wonderful father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will forever be missed.

Funeral services will be held Monday, September 13, 2010 at 11:00 AM at the Prospect United Methodist Church in Prospect with Rev. Robert Airhart  and Rev. Rich Allen officiating.  Burial will follow in Prospect Cemetery.  Friends may call from 4 to 8 PM on Sunday.
