Barbara E. Traxler, age 88, left this earth on Monday, March 7, to be with her heavenly father.
On June 26, 1922, she was born in Pittsburgh, PA to the late Martin Bruey and Margaret Baker Bruey. During her early childhood, she moved to Conneaut Lake, PA and then to Marion, OH.
She was a graduate of Conneaut Lake High School. After moving to Marion, she was able to practice her love of cooking in the 1950’s owning and operating Barb’s Truck Stop in Marion and Mom’s Country Kitchen in Caledonia in the 1970’s. In her later years, she was a homemaker; however, when she was in her 70’s, she worked at Fulfillment Corp. and the American Red Cross.
She loved feeding family, friends, and even strangers. She always welcomed anyone to her table to share a meal. She was known by many as “Mom”. She will always be remembered for her delicious homemade bread, noodles and sweet rolls which she baked with love and shared with everyone.
Her hobbies included knitting and crocheting. Her giving nature was evident when she lovingly knitted or crocheted a beautiful afghan and gave it as a gift for a special occasion. She also enjoyed writing poetry and shared her poems with many.
She was blessed with a beautiful voice and could sing any country or gospel song like a songbird. She was also a lover of animals; owning several cats and dogs over the years. She fed the wild birds and many stray cats ate free food on her porch.
Although she was raised in the Catholic faith, in her later years she practiced her spiritual faith by reading her bible daily and enjoying the Sunday morning sermons on TV.
She will be sadly missed by her seven children: Barbara (George) Collins, Edison; Larry Burt, Martel; Mary (Mike) Dardinger, Marion; Ted (Rosemary) Burt, Marion: Connie McFadden, Columbus; Peg (Jerry) Hissong, Caledonia and Melodee Rawlins, Marion.
“Grandma T” will be deeply missed by her 26 grandchildren: Tim Wilkins, Kim Auld, Becky Collins, Ray Conley, Chris Conley, David Burt, Johnny Burt, Larry Parker, Jennifer Burt, Ted Burt II, Sara Burt, Jeremy Burt, Teddi Burt, Ashley Burt, Tina Bahrens, Cindy Boston, Bobbie Irwin, Michael McFadden, Matthew McFadden, Justin McFadden, Molly McFadden, Laurie Edler, Emily Ollervides, Mitch Hissong, Brad Fetter and Randy Fetter. She was also very proud of and loved each of her great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father, Martin Bruey, her mother Margaret Hart, a brother, Fred Bruey, and two sisters, Betty Gibson and Delores Brawley.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 10 at 6:00 p.m. at the Grace Baptist Church at 1560 Marion-Marysville Rd, Marion. Burial will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Grace Baptist Church or the Marion County Humane Society.
