Richard E. Chapman, 78, of Richwood

Richard E. Chapman, age 78 of Richwood, died Saturday morning, June 18, 2011 at his home.

He was born March 22, 1933 in Richwood to the late Dallas Anson and Irma Irene (Pfleiderer) Chapman.

On August 3, 1956 he married the former Virginia Ellen “Ginger” Ames in Mt. Sterling, and she survives in Richwood.

He was born and raised in Richwood, graduating from Richwood High School in 1951 before joining the U. S. Army.  He worked at Whirlpool for 33 ½ years as a Traffic Coordinator, before retiring in 1988.  He was a painter and had done work for many people in the area.  Dick was an active member of the Richwood Church of Christ, and had been Cub Master for Cub Scout Pack 109.  He enjoyed fishing and following the Gibson racing family, having raced go karts in his younger days.  Dick loved sports of all kinds, especially basketball, which he played and coached for many years.

Besides his wife, Ginger, he is survived by three sons, Brent (Kim) Chapman, Richwood; Dean (Shelly) Chapman, York Center; Michael (Dawn Gray) Chapman, Richwood; a daughter, Debi (Kenny) Hamilton, Raymond; a brother, Larry Chapman, California; two sisters, Linda Shearer, California; Sharon (Hes) Williford, North Carolina; seven grandchildren, Shane (Chelse) Hamilton; Anson (Lisa) Hamilton; Brittany (Herbie) Chanley; Keenan Chapman; Tye (Jessica Skeen) Chapman; Baylee (Nick DeLauder) Chapman; Jason Chapman; five great-grandchildren, Collin Hamilton; Carter Hamilton; Gavin Dean DeLauder; Brycen Alan DeLauder; Addyson Hamilton and Cyler Skeen.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Vernon “Chippy” Chapman and a sister, Pat Terry.

A celebration of Dick’s life will be held Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at 6:00 PM in the Richwood Church of Christ with Pastor Matthew Craig officiating.  The family requests that everyone wear casual clothing and bright colors.  Military honors will be conducted by the Richwood Area Veterans. Friends may call two hours prior to the service, beginning at 4:00 PM.  A private family graveside will take place in York Cemetery at a later date.  The family is being assisted by Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home, Richwood.
