Alex Ryan Wilson, of Worthington, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 27, 2011. He was 18 years young.
On April 16, 1993, Alex was born in Marion General Hospital, the second child of Amy and Jerry Wilson.
A dedicated student, Alex recently graduated from Thomas Worthington High School in the Class of 2011, where he had enjoyed playing both football and basketball. He had also participated in their Cards for Kids mentoring program, showing how to be a good role model to elementary school students.
With a love for the “animals of the ocean”, Alex had chosen to attend Coastal Carolina in Conway, South Carolina, to study marine science and be near the beach.
For over three years, Alex had worked at the Worthington Christian Village in their “dietary” department helping with food service.
An avid sports fan, Alex had been active in sports most of his life, playing everything from soccer, football, basketball, track, and most recently tennis, though he may have been best at ping pong, which he loved. He also loved rooting for his beloved Florida Gators and Duke Blue Devils.
A gaming fanatic, Alex loved playing video games and playing with Yugioh trading cards.
One of Alex’s favorite pastimes was camping with his father, and they would always set up a tent down by the river, have a fire, cook hot dogs and marshmallows, and just sit and “talk”.
A quiet, introspective and observant young man, Alex often seemed deep in thought with questions of all sorts about life. He was also determined and always focused on the future, and much too hard on himself.
His family finds comfort in knowing, Alex was greeted in Heaven by his grandfather, his “Papaw”, Ronald Pitts, whom he shared a deep and special relationship with.
Alex will be deeply missed by his parents: Amy Wilson of Worthington, and Jerry (Michelle) Wilson of Marion; two sisters: Ashley and Caroline; step brother and sisters: Lee Gafkjen, Mia (Larry) Smith, Chelsea (Tony) Lamping, and Alysse Gafkjen; nieces and nephews: Sidney, Kinzie and Deacon; maternal grandmother, DeAnna Pitts; paternal grandparents: Jim & Martha Wilson, all three of Marion; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Alex was recently preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Ronald Pitts.
A service of remembrance in Alex’s honor will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 1, 2011, at the Karl Road Baptist Church, 5750 Karl Road, Columbus, Ohio, with Rev. Richard W. Breusch and Dr. Richard A. Farmer officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Marion Cemetery.
Rather than flowers, Alex’s family asks that memorial contributions be sent to the Thomas Worthington High School Scholarship Fund in memory of Alex, and they may be sent to the Worthington Education Center, 200 E. Wilson Bridge Rd., Worthington, Ohio 43085.
The Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home of Marion is honored to have been chosen to serve Alex’s family.
