Mary Jane George, 90, of Mount Gilead

Mary Jane George, age 90, a lifelong resident of Mount Gilead, died peacefully, Monday evening, September 19, 2011, at the Morrow County Hospital following an extended illness.

On May 17, 1921, Mary Jane was born in Mount Gilead, the daughter of the late Charles and Ida (Lee) O’Shaughnessy.  She graduated from Mount Gilead High School in the Class of 1939.

A short time after graduating, Mary Jane married the love of her life, Raymond George.  They lived together on a farm in Williamsport, where she stayed at home to take care of their three children.  He died unexpectedly in 1961, when he was only 43 years young.

To take care of her three children, Mary Jane began working at the Edison Elementary School, helping with their food service.  She worked there for over 20 years until her retirement.

A woman of faith, Mary Jane was the oldest living member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she had served as a deacon.  She also was a member of the Morrow County Hospital Flamingo TWIGs.

Over the years, Mary Jane has greatly enjoyed crocheting afghans, most especially for the new born children in her family, and playing cards with her friends.

Dedicated to her family, Mary Jane gladly took care of her mother and aunt, as she was truly a “caregiver”.

Mary Jane will be dearly missed by her three children: Annetta (George) Johnson of Edison, Janey George of Westerville, and Mark George of Mount Gilead; 6 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, John (Alice) O’Shaughnessy of Orient, North Carolina; a sister, Virginia (Donald) Bachelder of Mount Gilead, and several nieces and nephews.

Including her husband and parents, Mary Jane was preceded in death by her sister, Betty Burton; and by a great-grandchild.

The George family will greet friends from 1 – 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 22, 2011, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead.  Services honoring her life will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Dennis Braun officiating.  Burial will follow in Rivercliff Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Morrow County Hospital Extended Care Facility, c/o Activity Fund, 651 W. Marion Rd., Mt. Gilead, Ohio 43338, or to the First Presbyterian Church, 55 N. Cherry St., Mt. Gilead, Ohio 43338.
