Carolyn LaMarche Mantey age 87, of Marion, Ohio, found peace with the Lord on Tuesday, July 18, 2016.
A life-long native of Marion, she was born Nov. 2, 1928 to the late Faye Huber LaMarche and Carl F. LaMarche. Officially christened Frances Carolyn, she went by a variety of names throughout life. She was happiest, though, being known as wife, Mom, Grandma or Great- Grandma.
Carolyn, who attended Marion St. Mary’s Grade School, graduated from Ladywood School, Indianapolis. She obtained a degree in occupational therapy from Mount Mary University, Milwaukee, Wisc, working for several years at the Hines VA Hospital outside of Chicago and later at the Stokes VA Medical Center in Cleveland. It was here that she honed her creative side, often teaching WWII veterans tooling and leather-work to help improve hand dexterity.
Throughout her life she continued to express this creativity and used her talent to make traditions for her family that they will hold dear, such as Christmas stockings she created for every new member of the family–from babies to spouses. Each year she stuffed these stockings she had hand-designed with magnets, drawings and ornaments she also made herself.
Put-in-Bay always held a special place in her heart, where she spent summers as a child and retiree, and where she met the love of her life, Ed Mantey. Married on Jan. 22, 1955, they shared more than 60 years together, raising five children. As dairy farmers, together they taught their children the value of hard work and the importance of faith. Carolyn was as quick with a comeback as she was a homemade sandwich for your journey home after a visit.
She is survived by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. This extended family will carry on her legacy: son Joe (Terri) Mantey of Marion and their children Jennifer (Dean) McMahan, and Jackie, Jacob (Brittany) and Joel (Chelsea) Mantey; son Timothy (Patricia) of Marion and their children Jill and Marc Mantey; son Lynn Mantey of Marysville, Ohio and his children Katelin (Rob) Ahern and Tom Mantey; daughter Mary (Jim) Longo of Marion and their children Jimmy, Sarah and Christie; and daughter Susan Mantey and her husband Doug Herlensky of Sunbury, and their daughter Grace Herlensky. Her five great-grandchildren are Peyton and Morgan McMahan, Riley and Foster Mantey, and Declan Ahern.
She also is survived by sister Natalie A. (the late Martin J.) Hughes, Avon, Ohio. In addition to her parents, Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband, Edward A. Mantey, and siblings Marian Faye LaMarche and Charles Richard LaMarche.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to her caregivers, therapists and medical staff at Kingston Residential, Presidential Center, Kindred Hospice and Marion General Hospital.
