Lawrence Herman OrthmeyerLawrence Herman “Uncle Larry” Orthmeyer, age 98, of Marion passed away peacefully Saturday, September 10, 2016.

Larry was born in Marion, Ohio on February 5, 1918, one of five children, to the late Frank J. and Anna M. (Hartman) Orthmeyer.

Larry was a lifelong resident of Marion, graduating from St. Mary’s High School in 1936.

After graduation, Larry worked for American Malleable Casting and Huber Manufacturing before entering the US Army in 1941 during WWII. He served as leader of selected men en-route to the Induction Station at Fort Hayes in Columbus. While enlisted he was a Staff Sargent specializing in chemical warfare in the Pacific Theatre. Lawrence received an honorable discharge in 1945.

After his honorable discharge, Lawrence returned to working for Huber Manufacturing and then began working for Fairfield Engineering, where he worked in the Engineering Department as a draftsman and supervisor until his retirement in 1982.

Although a quiet man, Larry was an avid member of St. Mary Church in Marion never missing Mass. Larry had the distinct honor of being the oldest member of The Knights of Columbus Lodge #671. He continues to be a member of the Edward Huber Memorial Associates. In younger years, Larry was an avid golfer, bowler, and a blood donor.

Larry is survived by nieces and nephews, Elizabeth “Betty” (Harold, deceased) Bishop of Hebron, Ohio, Cletus Eugene (Marlene)  Uhl, Rosemary (James) Boblenz, Alice (Richard, deceased) Poorman, Lawrence “Larry” (JoAnn) Uhl, Beth Orthmeyer of Marion,   Francie and Sue Orthmeyer of Columbus, Thomas (Mary) Cochran of Ravenna, Ohio, Mary Ann Reedy of Lexington, Ohio, Barbara (Norm Haywood) Cochran of Lexington, Ohio,  Judy (Ron) Schnug of Mansfield, Ohio and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

Larry was preceded in death by parents Frank and Anna; brother, Francis (Ruth Yazel, deceased); sisters, Marguerite (Cletus, deceased) Uhl, Clara (Fred, deceased) Daly; twin sister, Mary (Bernard, deceased) Cochran; niece, Marguerite “Peggy” (Jerry, deceased) Richie; nephews, Thomas “Tom” (Dianna Sloan) Uhl and Richard Uhl; nephew-in-law, Ronald Zeller; and great-niece, Kelly Cochran.

Visitation will be held Friday, September 16, 2016 from 5 until 7 pm at Gunder/Hall & Snyder Funeral Home, 347 W. Center St., Marion.  A 10 am Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by Father Ryan Schmit at St. Mary Church, 251 N. Main St., Marion, Saturday, September 17, 2016 with calling one-half hour prior to the service.  Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery with Military Honors presented by The Marion County United Veteran’s Council.

Memorial donations may be made in Uncle Larry’s honor to St. Vincent de Paul, Marion or the Marion Knights of Columbus Wake Fund.
