Lucile Smith, “Snooky”, 77, of Marion

Lucile SmithA matriarchal woman with a heart of gold, Lucile Smith, better known as “Snooky”, went to be with the Lord on Friday, November 4, 2016, at her home following a brief illness.

On May 17, 1939, Snooky was born in Columbus, Ohio, one of eight children of the late Henry and Mary Angela (Enneking) Krigbaum.  When she was a young child her family moved to Marion Ohio, where she graduated from St. Mary’s High School in the class of 1957.  She later attended Mount St. Joseph’s University in Cincinnati.

After teaching at St. Mary’s School and working for a local physician in Marion, Snooky married, R. Dan Smith, on October 3, 1964.  Sharing deep affection for one another, they lovingly raised ten children who were the center of their lives.  They shared thirty-three years of marriage.  R. Dan preceded her in death on April 14, 1997.

A very nurturing woman, being a caretaker came naturally to Snooky.  She cared for others as an independent caregiver for over twenty-five years.  She also helped others while working for Marion General Hospice and as the activities director for a local nursing home.  Always sharing her unconditional love with everyone, she fostered infant children, welcoming them with open arms into her home.

A woman of deep faith, Snooky was a member of the St. Mary’s Parish.

Having “endless energy,” Snooky held herself and everyone around her to the highest of regards.  She kept a warm and welcoming home for friends and family.  Snooky enjoyed making crafts, always coming up with unique and creative ideas for every holiday and occasion.

Snooky will forever be remembered for her motherly characteristics.   She cherished every moment she spent with her children and grandchildren.

Left to cherish her memory are her ten children: Ann Marie (John) Colby of Monument, CO, John P. Smith of Marion, Mary L. Hall of Columbus, Elizabeth (James) Murphy of Chicago, IL, Amy (Michael) Picco of Oconomowoc, WI, Kevin R. Smith, Jennifer (William) McCafferty, both of Denver, CO, Bernard “B.J.” Smith of Marion, Carolyn Smith, and Angela (Keith) Ruf, both of Denver, CO; 16 grandchildren; five siblings: David (Lynn) Krigbaum, Mary Ellen “Tuggie” (Larry) Ryan, Henry “Hank” (Angela) Krigbaum, Joseph (Karen) Krigbaum, and Jane Ann (James) Epstein; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Including her husband and parents, Snooky was preceded in death by two siblings: Kevin Krigbaum and Angela “Angel” Sullivan.

Her family will greet friends from 4 – 7 p.m. on Monday, November 7, at the Snyder Funeral Homes, GUNDER/HALL Chapel, 347 W. Center St., Marion.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, at St. Mary Church(address below), with Father Thomas Buffer officiating.  Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Church, 251 N. Main St., Marion, OH 43302.
