Phyllis Ann Burns (White), age 78, passed away Thursday November 17, 2016 at her home.
Phyllis graduated from Marion Harding High School in 1956. She continued her education at The Ohio State University graduating cum laude with a B.S. in Education and an M.A. in Foreign Language Education.
She taught Spanish and, occasionally, English in the Marion City School for 26 years. During her tenure, she served as advisor to the Spanish Club and Foreign Language Dept. Chairperson. She was a member of Marion County and Ohio Retired Teachers Associations, a Jennings Scholar in 1989, and a Life Member of The Ohio State University Alumni Association. Phyllis had many fond memories of students and their trips to Spain, Mexico, and San Antonio during Fiestas Navidenas.
In addition to her professional life, she enjoyed traveling, reading, taking care of her flower garden, but especially, taking care of their five dogs and four cats during almost 60 years of marriage.
Phyllis is survived by her husband John Burns (Tex), two sons: Timothy Charles Burns and John Henry (Melody) Burns II and granddaughter Joy (Tim) Merryman and two great-granddaughters. She is also survived by sister Deborah Sue (Daniel) Crabtree and brother Steven Bruce Carr and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by mother and stepfather M. Eloise Carr and R.B. Carr and sister Dianna Lynn (Stan) Crabtree.
Per Phyllis’ wishes, no service will be held. Burial will be at a later date for the family.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Marion County Humane Society.
