Salt of the earth, Richard E. Danner Sr., age 92, of Morral, went to be with the Lord, Friday, November 18, 2016, at Marion General Hospital following a steady decline in his health.
On October 19, 1924, Richard was born in Marion County, Ohio, one of nine children of the late Jesse B. Danner Sr. and Elva Mae (Bonham) Danner. He was raised on the family farm, and graduated from Morral High School in the class of 1943, where he excelled and was captain of the basketball team.
Richard lived life simply, devoting his life to the things that mattered most to him: his family, his work and farm, and to the Lord.
The start of Richard’s family began one day when he was delivering eggs from the farm to Big Bear, he met a cashier he knew he wanted to marry, Norma Jackson. Not wasting any time, Richard told Norma the first rain during harvest season they would elope to be married. A man of his word, when the rain came, they got married in Indiana on October 5, 1953. Together they shared over sixty three wonderful years of marriage.
Growing up on the farm, Richard was taught the value of hard work as soon as he was able to start helping. In addition to helping his brother J.B. on the family farm and tending to his own farm, Richard worked as a press operator at the Whirlpool Corporation for thirty four years until his retirement in 1989. Following his retirement, he continued to farm as long as his body would allow.
A man of faith, Richard formerly was a fifty plus year member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church, where he served as a deacon.
When Richard wasn’t farming, he enjoyed watching NASCAR and following all of the local sports teams. He also loved fishing, and especially taking his yearly fishing trips with his brothers and friends up to Canada.
Simply put, Richard was “a quiet, good man” who was as consistent as the day is long.
He will be dearly missed by his beloved wife, Norma Danner of Morral; two children: Deborah (Mark) Goings of Circleville, and Richard “Rick” Danner Jr. of Marion; two grandchildren: Jacob and Aaron Goings; a brother, Clifford (Brenda) Danner; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Including his parents, Richard was preceded in death by seven siblings: Thelma Nichols, Laverne Johnson, Ralph Danner, Jesse “J.B.” Danner Jr., Robert Danner, Eva Millisor, and Virginia Robinson.
Services honoring Richard’s life were observed privately at Caledonia Cemetery, with Pastor Brett Cornelius officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 219 E. Church St., Marion, OH 43302, or you can donate to any local food bank as Richard often did.
