Emma Jane Barbier, 95, formerly from Marion

Emma Jane BarbierEmma Jane Barbier, age 95, formerly from Marion, Ohio, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, December 9, 2016 in Dallas, Texas.   She was born on January 7, 1921 in Wooster, Ohio to the late Samuel and Carmella (Tigre) Coccia.  Emma was preceded in death by her husband, Roy J. Barbier, who passed away on December 12, 2014.

Emma graduated from Wooster (Ohio) High School and immediately began working for the United Telephone Company as an operator; promoting quickly to supervisor.   Emma’s brother, Don served in the United States Coast Guard with Roy; thus, it was through their friendship the two would meet and eventually marry.  On December 31, 1947, Emma and Roy exchanged wedding vows and moved to New Orleans before finally settling down in Marion.   Emma gave up her working career to start a family. Being from Italian descent meant there was always something inviting to eat at the Barbier home. Her warmth and kindness was felt by all who were lucky enough to come in contact with her and the door was always open.   Emma was a friend to many and loved by all who knew her.

Surviving are Emma’s children, Deborah (Al) Van Winkle, Marion; David (Doris) Barbier, Danielle Barbier and Douglas (April Prichard) Barbier, all of Dallas.   Emma was blessed with two beautiful grandchildren, Dr. Ashley (Matt) Pettoni, Atlanta and Jarod Van Winkle, Columbus; along with three great-grandchildren, Emerson Grace, Addington Marie and Weston John Pettoni, Atlanta.  And, a brother, Otto Coccia, Milwaukie, WI.  Also, preceded in death by four brothers, Vee, Guy, Don and Dan Coccia.

Emma, forever faithful to the Lord, was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Marion and St. Rita Catholic Church in Dallas.

A funeral Mass will be said in celebration of Emma’s life at 10:30 am on Wednesday, December 14th, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Marion with Father Ryan Schmit officiating.   A one hour visitation will be held before the funeral at 9:30am.  The burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery immediately following the Mass.

The Barbier family would like to say thank you to the staff at Sunrise Assisted Living, Home Instead Senior Care and the Dallas Hospice Organization for providing such wonderful care to our loving mother.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial donations may be made in Emma’s name to St. Mary Catholic Church, 251 N. Main Street or the St. Vincent de Paul Society, 342 N. Main Street, both of Marion, Ohio 43302.
