LaVon Oreed (Schlecht) Ruth, age 88, of Marion, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 14, 2016, at Heartland Nursing Home with her loving family by her side following a battle with cancer.
On November 29, 1928, LaVon was born in Marion, Ohio, one of four children of the late Bernard B. and Gladys O. (Tong) Schlecht. She graduated from Marion Harding High School in the class of 1947.
Shortly following high school, while shooting the loop, LaVon met a young farmer, John “George” Ruth. They were married soon thereafter on June 10, 1951, and have cherished every minute of their sixty five years of marriage together. They also lovingly raised one son, David G. Ruth.
LaVon was a woman of humble faith, who loved being surrounded by her family and always put her family first, whether it was helping on the family farm or serving a meal out in the fields during planting and harvest. She also loved babysitting her grandsons when they were young and later in life her great granddaughters. She loved flowers and could be found on many sunny days sitting in the yard tending her flower beds. If asked what the highlight of her week might be she would answer getting her hair done by her favorite stylist, Jean Wood.
LaVon was quite the cook and at every family or church gathering she would proudly present her “famous” peanut butter pie for the crowd to enjoy.
LaVon was a member of the Emmanuel Reformed Church of Green Camp, where she kept weekly records of attendance. She also was a member of Les Femme Firm Homemakers Club.
She will be dearly missed by her beloved husband, J. George Ruth of Marion; their son, David G. (Deb) Ruth; two grandsons: Andrew (Melinda) Ruth and Brian (Marie) Ruth; three great-granddaughters: Madelyn, Anna and Elyse Ruth, all of Marion; two brothers: Lowell (Kitty) Schlecht of Marion, and Leonard (Nancy) Schlecht of New Jersey; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Including her parents, LaVon was preceded in death by her brother, LeRoy B. Schlecht.
Her family will greet friends from 2 – 5 p.m. on Sunday, December 18, at the Snyder Funeral Homes, DENZER Chapel, 360 E. Center St., Marion. Services honoring her life will also be held there at 10 a.m. on Monday, with Pastors Melvin Bowling and Steve deWeber officiating. Burial will follow in Marion Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Emmanuel Reformed Church of Green Camp or to the American Cancer Society and they may be made to the funeral home.
