While his many family and friends are devastated by the unexpected loss of their beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and dear friend, Thomas “MOOSE” Young…for Moose he went out the way he would have wanted. He was called to heaven with a trophy in hand in his precious 1928 Ford Model A, after winning awards earlier in the day at a car show. For Moose, he didn’t have to endure more heart surgeries or stay in a hospital bed, instead he went out on top. Nevertheless, Moose was much too young, only 53, leaving us early Sunday morning, January 22, 2017. He was of LaRue.
On November 12, 1964, Moose was born in Marion, Ohio, one of seventeen children of Rowena (Bowen) Young of Marion and the late Clifford Young. He graduated from Marion Harding in the class of 1982.
For over ten years, Moose worked as a crane operator for MF Johnson, Inc. in Marion. He also had worked at the John St. Radiator Shop for many years.
Moose’s true passion in life though, started as a teenager, when he was the gopher for his brother, Ashley, fetching car parts in their garage to fix his Chevelle SS’s and Camero Z28’s. From that day forward, Moose was hooked. He was an official “car nut, a grease monkey.” There wasn’t anything on a car Moose couldn’t fix, and he lived to flip and restore cars. His most prize possessions were his 1965 Chevelle and his 1928 Ford Model A, both of which he had in mint condition. Moose had a huge and immaculate work shop, never allowing even a speck of dust in there, always shop-vaccing every inch of his garage. He also was meticulous about his yard, mowing and raking every day it was needed, keeping even squirrels out of his yard.
An avid car show fanatic, Moose attended every car show he could make it to. He was a member of the Good Guys Auto Show, and often went to their car shows. Moose was extremely proud to have won awards at three of the last four shows he attended.
A family man, Moose deeply loved his life companion of over twenty years, Jennifer Ottman, whom he officially married on April 5, 2013. Jennifer’s daughter, Stephanie, quickly became Moose’s daughter too. Their grandchildren were his best buddies, and to them he was their “PaPaw Moose”. He and Carson mowed the lawn and rode four wheelers together…they were inseparable. He also was a “Mommy’s boy,” calling his mother, Row, every day of his life to make sure she was having a good day.
Moose was truly “loved by all.” He will forever be missed by his wife, Jennifer Young; daughter, Stephanie (John) Coons; two grandsons: Carson Hopkins and Colt Coons; mother, Rowena Young; siblings: Bill (Phyllis) Spaulding, Jewel (Gene) Beatty, Sandy (G.B.) Caudill, Kathy (Buck) Messenger, Brenda Bosh, Ashley (Cassandra) Young, Sharon (Rick) Rollin, Jeanette (Steve) Caldwell, Judy (James) Ferguson, Edna (Brian Hindman) Young, and Jeff (Wayne Bowman) Young; too many special nieces and nephews to count; mother-in-law, Alyce Ottman; and several brothers and sisters-in-law.
Including his father, Moose was preceded in death by two brothers: Brother John and Ricky Young.
His family will greet friends from 4 – 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 26, at the John M. Boler Activity Center, 590 Forest Lawn Dr., Marion. Services honoring his life will also be held there at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 27.
