Gloria Yvonne Mulvaine, age 87, of Prospect, passed away Thursday, August 23, 2018, at Grady Memorial Hospital in Delaware following a recent stroke.
On March 1, 1931, Gloria was born in Marion, Ohio, the older of two daughters of the late William E. and Mildred P. (Eddy) Reams. She graduated from Marion Harding High School in the Class of 1949. She then furthered her education at The Ohio State University.
For thirty-one years, Gloria was the director of the Marion County Unit of the American Cancer Society, where she, along with WDIF, started the WDIF Cancer Stereothon. That fund raiser, as well as numerous others, including the Relay for Life, garnered thousands of dollars each year for patient services and research. She retired from the American Cancer Society in 1996.
Always keeping busy, Gloria returned to work at the Delaware Avenue Kroger Pharmacy, from where she again retired after twelve years.
Gloria was a member and former officer of the Eastern Star and Marion County Ohio State University Alumni Association. In earlier years she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School at Epworth United Methodist Church, where she was a member.
An avid hiker, Gloria enjoyed taking day trips to hike every State Park in Ohio and traveling as far east as Acadia National Park and as far west as Olympic National Park, as well as overseas, to hike and enjoy nature.
Proud to be a Buckeye, Gloria loved following many OSU sports. She even was of the few who actually attended the OSU vs. Michigan “Snow Bowl” in 1950. She also enjoyed volunteering at her grandson’s school in Delaware.
Gloria had a deep appreciation for life, living by her motto that “every day was a holiday and every meal a feast.” Everywhere she went she met and made lifetime friends.
Left to cherish her memory are her two sons: David W. Cheney and Paul M. Cheney; a daughter-in-law married to Paul, Carolyn (Alic) Cheney; a grandson, Michael M. Cheney; a sister, Angela Parks; in-laws: Michael and Antoinette “Toni” Alic; and their daughter, Maryanne Alic; and by numerous friends who called her “Mom” or “Sister”.
Including her parents, Gloria was preceded in death by her husband, Richard E. Mulvaine; and by her former husband, David E. Cheney.
Her family will greet friends from 5 – 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 29, 2018, at the Snyder Funeral Homes, DENZER Chapel, 360 E. Center St., Marion. Services honoring her life will also be held there at 11 a.m. on Thursday, with Rev. Daniel Kiger officiating. Her family will again greet friends for an hour prior to her services. Burial will follow in Hale Cemetery in Mt. Victory, Ohio.
Memorial contributions may be made to the OSU Alumni Club of Marion County Scholarship Fund, 885 Whetstone River Rd S, Caledonia, OH 43314.
