The Cleveland Browns fell to 0-3 with their 24-14 loss to the Buffalo Bills (2-1) at Cleveland Browns Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
With 4:59 remaining in the fourth quarter of play, the Browns took over possession of the football at Buffalo’s 42-yard line. However, they were not able to take advantage of the field position.
On first-and-10, quarterback Brandon Weeden was sacked by defensive tackle Marcell Dareus and end Mario Williams for a loss of 10 yards. Facing a second-and-20 from the Browns’ 48-yard line, Weeden dropped back to pass and threw the ball deep down the right side of the field for wide receiver Josh Gordon.
Veteran defensive back Leodis McKelvin read the play, stepped in the passing lane and intercepted the ball. After McKelvin’s nine-yard return, the Bills faced a first-and-10 from their own 40-yard line.
Buffalo quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Stevie Johnson and extended the Bills’ lead to 24-14 over the Browns with 9:08 left in the fourth quarter.
Johnson ran a slant route over the middle of the field and caught the pass just shy of the goal line. He then ran the ball into the end zone for his first touchdown of the game and the third for Fitzpatrick.
The Bills drove 68 yards in 10 plays on the scoring drive.
The Browns trailed the Bills 17-14 after three quarters of play.
Weeden completed a 22-yard touchdown pass to fellow first-year player, wide receiver Travis Benjamin on a deep out-route down the left side of the field with 2:27 remaining in the third quarter.
Weeden’s pass drew the Browns to within three points of the visiting Bills at 17-14.
The drive lasted 13 plays and covered 80 yards.
