Despite the Cleveland Browns’ 41-27 loss to the New York Giants Sunday at MetLife Stadium, rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden showed a resolve in his postgame press conference.
“I don’t like being 0-5,” Weeden said. “We all had a part in it, but I feel like I was a big part of it. I’ve got to change something. I’ve got to do something to give this team a chance to win. Being the quarterback, you can’t put it all on your shoulders, but you’re the guy.
“Being 0-5 stinks. That’s really all I can say. I want to win more than the next guy. We’ll get there. I can see it. I think a lot of people can see it. We’ve got a really good group of guys and there’s not another group of guys I’d want to go through this battle with than the 53 that are in this locker room.”
After building a 10-point lead in the game’s first five minutes, the Browns were on the doorstep of extending their advantage back to two scores over the Giants with just under four minutes to play in the first half. However, two Browns (0-5) turnovers, one on offense and another on special teams, turned that lead into a 10-point deficit in their loss to the reigning Super Bowl champion Giants (3-2).
“It is frustrating,” Weeden said. “Coming in, I’ve never really been on a losing team. I want to win so bad; I want to win so bad and losing hurts. We’ve got to find a way; I’ve got to find a way. I can’t put our team in tough situations, and we’ve just got to play four quarters.”
Faced with a third-and-one from New York’s 25-yard line, Weeden took a shotgun snap from center Alex Mack and looked to the right of the formation. He threw the ball for rookie wide receiver Josh Gordon, but the pass was intercepted by Giants safety Stevie Brown and returned 46 yards to the Browns’ 40-yard line.
Giants quarterback Eli Manning took the first snap after the turnover and completed a 36-yard pass to rookie wide receiver Reuben Randle. Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw then ran the ball into the end zone from four yards out.
“We were trying to get up to the line quick and just get a quick, little shot to the flat and they covered it well,” Weeden said. “I tried to make a play and it was stupid. I should’ve airmailed it and let Phil (Dawson) kick a field goal. That was obviously one throw I want back. That was a frustrating one for me.”
On the ensuing kickoff, Joshua Cribbs fumbled the football and the Giants recovered at the Browns’ 29-yard line.
Manning again took advantage of the turnover by throwing a seven-yard touchdown pass to third-year wide receiver Victor Cruz.
