Kyrie Irving drained a 3-pointer with 28.1 seconds left and jumped up to chest bump Dion Waiters. The Cavs were about to beat the Los Angeles Clippers, 108-101, for their first road win of the season and the Cavs’ young backcourt had done its part.
Rookie Dion Waiters scored a career-high 28 points, including seven 3-pointers, and Irving added 24 points, including four 3-pointers, as the Cavs beat the Clippers for the 13th time in 15 matchups to improve to 2-2. Anderson Varejao had 15 points and 15 rebounds and Alonzo Gee’s defense helped hold Chris Paul to 17 points as the Cavs split the first two games of this six-game trip.
Blake Griffin had 20 points and Jamal Crawford added 19, including four 3-pointers, for the Clippers, 2-2.
Irving got the Cavs started with 16 points in the first quarter, Even though the Clippers shot 52.6 percent overall in the first quarter, and 57 percent from 3-point range, Cleveland emerged with a 31-28 lead heading into the second quarter.
Thanks to six points each by Waiters and Varejao in the second period, the Cavs pushed that lead to 57-50 at halftime.
Waiters took over the scoring load in the third quarter, hitting all four shots he took, including three 3-pointers for 12 points that helped the Cavs take an 84-78 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
