Opening the game on a 14-2 run, the No. 20/21 Ohio State women’s basketball team beat Winthrop, 78-53, Saturday afternoon in St. John Arena. A trio of Buckeyes in Tayler Hill (16), Darryce Moore (16) and Ashley Adams (14) scored in double digits to lead Ohio State to its 14th victory in St. John Arena since the 2004-05 season. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 2-1 on the season and the Eagles fall to 1-1.
The Buckeyes were off to a fast start, going 4-for-4 from the 3-point line in the first 3:30 en route to a 43-20 lead at halftime. Hill finished the first half with 12 points on 4-for-6 shooting, including a 4-for-5 FG percentage from behind the arc.
After shooting 50 percent from the field in the first half, the Buckeyes’ shooting cooled in the second as they shot 42 percent from the floor. However, consistent scoring contributions from Adams helped seal the victory as she led Ohio State with eight points in the second half. Adams nearly recorded her second double double of the season behind eight rebounds.
In addition to her 14 points on 7-for-14 shooting, Adams was strong defensively, recording six blocks, just one shy of tying her personal best. Amber Stokes chipped in four steals and maintained her defensive presence to help limit Winthrop to 37 percent shooting from the floor for the game. Stokes finished the game with eight points and Raven Ferguson scored seven points.
Diana Choibekova and Dequesh McClanahan led Winthrop in scoring with 12 points each, while Aliyah Kilpatrick and Samiya Wright contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Ohio State’s Maleeka Kynard added five points, including a 3-pointer off the bench and Moore grabbed nine of Ohio State’s 46 rebounds.
The Buckeyes return to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday vs. Saint Francis (Pa.) in Value City Arena.
