A nine run seventh by Indianapolis was more than enough for the Indians as they beat Columbus 12-7 at Huntington Park .
Former Clipper Jared Goedert got the scoring started in the top of the second with a solo bomb over the centerfield wall.
Columbus would finally get the offense going in the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded and one out, Cedric Hunter lined a single down the right field line, bringing home two runs and giving the Clippers a 2-1 lead. A third run would cross the late in the inning when Luis Hernandez scored on a Roberto Perez RBI sacrifice fly.
The Indians would creep closer with a run in the top of the fifth, but Columbus responded with a Mike McDade RBI double and Luis Hernandez RBI single. It seemed that the Clippers were in good stead at that point, but Indy would score a whopping nine runs in the top of seventh, sending thirteen batters to the plate and highlighted by two run doubles by Goedert and Tony Sanchez .
Despite a run in the eighth and a Luis Hernandez homer in the ninth, but it would not be enough as Indianapolis vaulted itself into first place in the IL West. Tim Alderson (W, 1-0) was awarded the win for Indy. Corey Kluber (L, 1-1) took the loss for Columbus.
The Clippers continue their seven game home stand by welcoming the Louisville Bats to Huntington Park on Monday. It will be a pair of Venezuelan right-handers dueling on the mound as Louisville’s Armando Galarraga (1-1, 2.53) faces off against Columbus’ Scott Kazmir, who is making his first start for the Clippers this season as part of a rehab assignment for the Cleveland Indians. Monday night is the first of many Dime-a-Dog nights at the ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM.
