On the strength of quarterback Ryan Tannehill completing 24 of 38 attempts for 272 yards and one touchdown, the Miami Dolphins earned a 23-10 victory over the Cleveland Browns in the regular-season opener for both teams at FirstEnergy Stadium Sunday.
Miami kicker Caleb Sturgis converted a 36-yard field goal, and put the Dolphins in front of the Browns, 23-10, with 4:02 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Sturgis’ kick capped off a four-play drive that started with a turnover on downs after Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden was sacked by Miami defensive end Cameron Wake on fourth-and-two from Cleveland’s 33-yard line.
Miami running back Daniel Thomas hurdled the offensive line and scored from one yard out, which extended the Dolphins’ lead over the Browns to 20-10 with 6:51 to play in regulation.
The drive travelled 85 yards in 10 plays and took 5:06 off the fourth-quarter clock.
The Dolphins held a 13-10 lead over the Browns after three quarters of play.
Cleveland kicker Billy Cundiff converted a 39-yard field goal and cut Miami’s lead over the Browns to 13-10 with 3:02 remaining in the third quarter. Cundiff’s first field goal with the Browns since the 2009 season capped off a nine-play, 59-yard drive that took 3:44 off the clock.
Tannehill threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver — and Canton, Ohio, native — Brian Hartline, and put the Dolphins back in front of the Browns, 13-7, with 6:46 to play in the third quarter.
