Three touchdowns and two field goals proved to be too much for the Cleveland Browns to overcome, as they fell, 27-11, to the Pittsburgh Steelers in an AFC North Division showdown at FirstEnergy Stadium Sunday.
With the win, the Steelers improved 5-6 on the season, and the loss dropped the Browns to 4-7.
On the strength of a four-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, the Steelers held a 20-3 lead over the Browns after three quarters of play.
On first-and-goal from the four with 7:43 to play in the third quarter, Roethlisberger took the snap and threw a slant route to Sanders, who was open on the right side of the formation.
The Steelers’ second touchdown of the game was set up by a Browns turnover.
On third-and-seven from Pittsburgh’s 39-yard line, Browns quarterback Jason Campbell took a shotgun snap from center Alex Mack and the Steelers ran a cornerback blitz. Veteran cornerback William Gay hit Campbell up high, but jarred the ball loose and Will Allen recovered the fumble. Allen scooped up the ball at Pittsburgh’s 47-yard line and returned it 49 yards before being tripped up by running back Chris Ogbonnaya inside the five.
Gay later punctuated the Steelers’ defensive effort with a 21-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
