A 20-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Chad Henne to wide receiver Cecil Shorts III with 40 seconds left in the game gave the Jacksonville Jaguars a 32-28 win over the Cleveland Browns Sunday at FirstEnergy Stadium.
On third-and-nine , Henne took the shotgun snap and fired a strike to Shorts III, a Cleveland native, for the go-ahead touchdown, and the Browns were unable to mount a comeback in the game’s final seconds.
Two plays after the Jaguars extended their lead over the to four points with just over four minutes to play in the fourth quarter, the Browns came storming back and took a 28-25 lead on Josh Gordon’s 95-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Brandon Weeden.
Backed up to the five-yard line after a penalty on a kickoff return, Weeden dropped back to pass and hit Gordon down the right side of the field, and the second-year wide receiver outran the Jacksonville secondary to the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown.
Jacksonville kicker Josh Scobee connected on a 25-yard field goal and extended the Jaguars’ lead over the Browns to 25-21 with just over four minutes to play in the fourth quarter. Scobee’s third field goal of the game capped off a seven-play, 36-yard drive that was set up by a Browns miscue.
On first-and-10 from the Cleveland 14-yard line, center Alex Mack snapped the ball to Weeden, but the exchange sailed over Weeden’s head and into the end zone. Weeden kicked the ball out of bounds for a safety.
The Browns held a 21-20 lead over the Jaguars after three quarters of play.
After committing three turnovers in the final three minutes of the first half, Weeden engineered a 10-play, 80-yard drive that he punctuated with a four-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Greg Little. Weeden’s pass to Little gave the Browns a 21-20 lead over the visiting Jaguars with 9:44 to play in the third quarter.
Three Browns turnovers in the final three minutes of the first half have allowed the Jaguars to take a 20-14 lead into halftime.
