Clippers Beat Mud Hens 11-6

Columbus ClippersThe Columbus Clippers (71-59) beat up the Toledo Mud Hens (63-67) 11-6 in the first of three at Huntington Park. Columbus rallied for a huge first inning. In the first every player for Columbus contributed to the rally and the Clippers sent 12 to the plate. Columbus went 5-13 with runners in scoring position.

It was his Triple-A debut, but a game to forget for Toledo’s Buck Farmer (0-1, 189.00 ERA). He only recorded one out, but allowed eight runs, seven earned, on five hits with three walks. Josh Outman (3-1, 4.42 ERA) got the win for Columbus out of the bullpen. Bryan Price recorded a nine-out save for Columbus, his first save of the season.

Gabriel Arias (6-2, 4.13 ERA) failed to take advantage of his run support. He went just three and two-third innings and allowed five runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.

The Clippers tied their record for most runs scored in an inning in the first. Tyler Holt singled to start the inning innocently enough and moved to second on a Francisco Lindor bunt. Jesus Aguilar walked with one out.

Then it got crazy.

Giovanny Urshela blasted a three-run homer to the concourse beyond left field. It was his 13th homer with Columbus and organizational-leading 81st RBI.

It got worse.

James Ramsey walked and Matt Carson blooped a single to center. Carlos Moncrief hit a seeing-eye single up the middle to drive in a run. Elliot Johnson walked to load the bases. Luke Carlin chased Farmer with a two-run single to right. An error off the bat of Holt scored a run and an RBI single by Lindor capped off the inning.

In the first every Clipper either scored or drove in a run. Urshela, Moncrief and Carlin each did both.

Toledo did manage some offense after the first. Tyler Collins homered with two down in the third. In the fourth inning Ben Guez drove in a pair with a two-run double. Wade Gaynor plated Guez with a two-out double. A single by Worth drove in Gaynor and made it an 8-5 game.

That’s as close as it got. The game wasn’t the biggest of blowouts, but in the seventh Toledo opted to use first baseman Jordan Lennerton to pitch. He pitched two perfect innings.

Kyle Davies (8-7, 3.77 ERA) will lead the Clippers into action Tuesday at Huntington Park. The Mud Hens counter with Shawn Hill (5-5, 4.52 ERA). First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
