The Columbus Clippers (71-60) fell to the Toledo Mud Hens (64-67) 9-1 Tuesday night. The offense struggled to get going for Columbus and the Clippers committed two errors in the loss. The loss ended a four-game winning streak for the Clippers at Huntington Park.
Kyle Davies (8-8, 3.91 ERA) got off to a solid start, but ran into trouble allowing three runs in the fifth. He allowed four runs in five and one-third innings on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Shawn Hill (6-5, 4.25 ERA) was very impressive in his second game with the Mud Hens. He pitched eight innings of one-run ball with one walk and two strikeouts.
The scoring pace was much slower early than in Monday’s game. Toledo got on the board first with a homer by Jordan Lennerton to start the fourth.
A Matt Carson lead-off double and Justin Sellers sacrifice fly tied the game in the fifth.
A rally in the sixth gave the lead right back to Toledo. A one-out single by Hernan Perez, Lennerton walk and single by James McCann plus an error in right field by Matt Carson made it 2-1 Toledo. Mike Hessman hit a double to dead center to make it 4-1.
In addition to the two errors there were two wild pitches and a passed ball by Columbus in the loss.
The Clippers and Mud Hens play the last of three at Huntington Park with Tyler Cloyd (10-7, 3.98 ERA) on the mound opposite of Kyle Ryan (1-0, 2.25 ERA) for Toledo. First pitch is 7:05 p.m. Wednesday.
