Hawkeyes upend Buckeyes 71-65 to open Big Ten

Jarrod Uthoff and Aaron White each scored 18 points to lead Iowa past No. 20 Ohio State 71-65 Tuesday in the Big Ten opener for both teams.

The Hawkeyes (10-4, 1-0) never trailed after the opening minute, leading by as many as 12 points in the first half and holding on when Ohio State (11-3, 0-1) applied pressure at the end.

Sam Thompson had 17 points, D’Angelo Russell scored 13 despite heavy foul trouble and Marc Loving added 10 for the Buckeyes, who had won eight games in a row in the series before the Hawkeyes won at Value City Arena last year 84-74. Three weeks later, the Buckeyes won in Iowa City 76-69.

Iowa holds a 75-72 edge in head-to-head meetings.

The Hawkeyes served notice early that they were going to attack Ohio State’s 2-3 zone. They hit their first five shots from the field, including both 3-pointers, and added 5 of 6 free throws in taking a 17-5 lead in the opening 4 minutes. White, an Ohio native cheered by a throng of family and friends, had seven points and Peter Jok five in the quick spurt.

The Buckeyes cut the deficit to three and trailed 31-26 after a Shannon Scott free throw at the 6:15 mark. But the Hawkeyes reeled off the next seven points – while Ohio State was 0 for 5 from the field – to stretch the lead out again. By half, they led 43-31, with Uthoff scoring 12 – nine of the points coming on 3s – and White 10 points.

The Buckeyes weathered the sleepy start, but after making 11 of their first 17 shots from the field, missed 7 of their last 8.
