Down 2-0 with 64 seconds left in regulation, it didn’t look good for the Blue Jackets.
They were approaching 50 shots on old friend Steve Mason but hadn’t scored, until Boone Jenner and Cam Atkinson scored two quick goals to stun the Flyers and push the game into overtime.
With a deft deke, Jenner scored the lone goal of a five-round shootout to secure two improbable points for the Blue Jackets in front of 16,230 at Nationwide Arena tonight.
“That was a relentless win for us,” Jenner said after the game. “I think you see how many shots we were getting and how much zone time we were getting, but we weren’t getting rewarded for it and it just happened that it took 59 minutes. We scored huge goals at the end there to give us a chance at overtime. I think from then on, we were rolling.”
The Blue Jackets recorded 53 shots in the overtime win, equaling the most shots in a game at Nationwide Arena (Oct. 28, 2005 vs. Minnesota). They weren’t just satisfied to spoil the shutout for Mason late in regulation, as he was solid all night for the Flyers and appeared to have the game locked up.
“I thought we played hard all night long,” Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella said after the game. “I thought we played well all night long. We just stayed with it and quite honestly, it’s a game I thought we deserved to win.”
Blue Jackets goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky made 31 saves in regulation and overtime and went 5-for-5 in the shootout. Bobrovsky said after being out of the lineup for a long time, it felt good to get the overtime win for his team.
