Where one winning streak ends, another begins.
A night after the Columbus Clippers (17-8) gave up seven runs in an inning, they brought five home in the top of the fourth on their way to a 8-3 win against Charlotte (11-15) at BB&T Ballpark in front of 8,131 in attendance on Tuesday night.
No team got a hit until the fourth inning, and that’s when the Clippers’ bats came to life.
Current International League Batter of the Week Giovanny Urshela came through with his 14th RBI of the season, a base hit to left field scoring Erik Gonzalez from second base.
Urshela would finish the night 2-for-3 with that RBI and two runs scored.
Joey Butler’s triple the next at bat made it 2-0 Clippers and Anthony Recker singled up the middle with two outs to plate Butler with the third run.
The Clippers would tack on two more via Ronny Rodriguez’s bases clearing triple with runners on first and second to extend the lead to five.
Clippers right fielder Colin Cowgill put the game out of reach with his three run bomb with two outs in the fifth. The home run was Cowgill’s first of the campaign.
The Knights would plate a run in the bottom half of the fifth, seventh and ninth innings, but they would never threaten the Clippers’ lead at any point throughout the night.
Columbus starter in southpaw Ryan Merritt (2-2) went seven innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits, walking a batter and punching out six.
His opposition in righty Chris Volstad (1-2) tossed five innings, has he gave up eight runs (two unearned) on seven hits while walking one and fanning five.
