The Clippers (21-11), aided by a pair of IronPigs errors in the bottom of the second inning, cashed in for six runs thanks to an Adam Moore three-run home run to right-center, a two-run double by Michael Martinez and a wild pitch from Lehigh Valley starter Mark Appel (3-2) that gave Martinez the opportunity to score from third in their 10-2 win over Lehigh Valley (15-17) on Wednesday night at Huntington Park in front of a crowd of 6,316.
The IronPigs would cut the Clippers lead to four on a two out, two-run home run to the lawn in left center field by Andrew Knapp in the top of the sixth inning.
The Clippers would get both of those runs back immediately though, as Martinez grounded into a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded and one out, allowing Moore to score as well as Ronny Rodriguez thanks to another Lehigh Valley error to make it 8-2.
Yhoxian Medina launched his first home run as a Clipper in the seventh, and a Jesus Aguilar RBI single in the eighth added another run for good measure, ending the scoring for the evening.
Columbus right-handed starter Mike Clevinger (5-0) was his usual dominant self, throwing six innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits while walking a pair of batters and striking out seven.
Appel ended his night after five innings, giving up six runs (three earned) on seven hits. He walked a batter and fanned five.
The win marked Columbus’ 11th consecutive win at Huntington Park. They now own a 13-3 record in games played on their home field.
The Clippers will look to send the IronPigs packing out of central Ohio without a win tomorrow morning at 11:05 a.m. as part of a business day special in the Arena District.
