Workshops Offered to Help Students Improve ACT Scores

To help students achieve higher ACT scores, the I CAN Center of Excellence, a regional non-profit college access organization, is conducting two, three-hour workshops to help better prepare north central Ohio students to take their college entrance exam.

Ohio to Receive “Race to the Top” Grant

Nine states and the District of Columbia will get money to reform schools in the second round of the $4.35 billion "Race to the Top" grant competition, The U.S. Education Department said Tuesday.

Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island and Washington, D.C., will receive grants, department spokesman Justin Hamilton said. The amounts for each state were expected to be announced later.

City School Students Can Start Earning Scholarships in Kindergarten

Imagine getting your first college scholarship before you even learn to read.  That is part of a new partnership between The Ohio State University at Marion and Marion City Schools.

The Ohio State University at Marion and Marion City Schools have teamed up in a pilot program beginning in the 2010-2011 academic school year and beyond that could mean increased attendance and academic performance in Marion City grades K-12, while providing up to $100,000 in scholarships annually to attend college.

Over 150 Local Kids Benefit from School Supply Collection

Dan DeVille, First Energy Representative, dropping off items collected by the employees at FirstEnergy.As a strategy in their Education initiative, the United Way of Marion County and its partner agency Heart of Ohio Mentoring recently collected more than 2,000 back-to-school supplies through its second annual “Stuff the Bus” community campaign. The supplies were passed on to the NAACP and Marion Rec Center for distribution to more than 150 local children.

Ohio Students Improve ACT Scores Slightly

Ohio students taking the ACT college entrance exam have scored slightly higher this year and are better prepared for college than their counterparts nationwide.

Rec Department Holding School Supply Giveaway

The City of Marion Recreation Department is having a school supply giveaway on Friday, August 13, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm or until gone. The giveaway will take place at the Recreation Center in downtown Marion, 240 West Church  Street.

Area Churches Providing Free School Supplies to Hundreds of Kids

Richland Road Church of Christ, Fite Memorial Baptist Church, and Trinity Baptist Church in Marion are giving away school supplies for local kids this Saturday and Sunday. Another event on Sunday includes four churches providing school supplies and other services for kids and adults. All of the events are free and open to the general public.

Ohio Named Finalist to Receive Federal Education Funds

Eighteen states and the District of Columbia were named finalists Tuesday in the second round of the federal "Race to the Top" school reform grant competition, giving them a chance to receive a share of $3.4 billion.

The states are: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and South Carolina.

City Schools, United Way are Preparing Kids for School

While school is out, for 140 kids entering kindergarten this fall, their school experience begins soon. Those students are part of the three week Kindergarten Readiness summer program funded by United Way of Marion County.

Students Participate in Pilot Netbook Program
