AAA – Gas Prices Not Likely to Fall Anytime Soon

Gas prices spiked once again Monday afternoon at many Ohio gas stations. Around Marion, prices Wednesday morning were averaging about $3.85 per gallon. This is the latest in a series of price spikes that have taken place across the state since early July. AAA reports that the higher gas price trend is not likely to end in the near future.

Approval of AEP Rate Plan Could Mean Rate Increases

The Office of the Ohio Consumers’ Counsel (OCC) says customers will see hundreds of millions of dollars in new rate increases following a decision Wednesday by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) to authorize a new American Electric Power (AEP) rate plan.  Under the law, AEP has the right to now consider whether or not to accept the modified plan.

Proposal to Increase County Sales Tax to Appear on November Ballot

The Marion County Commissioners Tuesday morning voted 2-1 to place a 0.25 percent sales tax increase proposal on the November ballot for voters to decide. During more than an hour of discussion, there were voices for and against the increase, of which the lion’s share would go to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and the Multi-County Correctional Center.

Gas Price Spike Blamed on Refinery Issues

Ohio gas prices started off Monday, July 30 at an average of $3.46 a gallon for regular unleaded gasoline. By the end of the day on Monday, gas prices at many Ohio gas stations had jumped to $3.69 a gallon. In Marion, some stations saw price increases of over 40 cents. AAA says this price spike was the result of regional supply concerns in the wake of a series of refinery issues.

Gas prices at many central Ohio gas stations jumped Tuesday to $3.59 a gallon. AAA says the primary reason for the recent increase in retail gasoline prices is increasing crude oil prices.

Groups File Protest over Ohio Edison Rate Increase Request

Citing a concern that FirstEnergy customers could be subjected to electric bill increases from approximately 4% to 30 % for Cleveland Electric Illuminating, 4% to 26% for Toledo Edison and 4% to 27% for Ohio Edison, the Office of the Ohio Consumers’ Counsel (OCC) and two major local government aggregation coalitions, representing all of FirstEnergy’s 1.9 million residential consumers, has filed briefs to ask the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) to reject the utilities’ proposed electric security plan and the settlement of other parties that support it.

Water Rates to Increase for Marion Customers

Water and sewer rates are scheduled to increase for customers of the recently sold Ohio American Water (OAW) after the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) Wednesday approved a settlement between the utility and the PUCO Staff.

The rate increase will be lower than what OAW, now known as Aqua Ohio Water Company, originally proposed as a result of negotiations among the utility, the Office of the Ohio Consumers’ Counsel (OCC), and the PUCO Staff in two related cases.
