Residents Should Watch Out for Scams Following Storms

Following the violent weather in Ohio this weekend, Attorney General Mike DeWine today offered a warning to residents to beware of traveling contractors who try to take advantage of homeowners in need of assistance. To help protect local residents, the City of Marion requires that all solicitors be registered.

Statewide State of Emergency Declared Following Storms

Governor John R. Kasich has declared a state of emergency for the entire state of Ohio after severe storms and high winds knocked out power for approximately one million power company customers across two-thirds of the state. The widespread outages could take up to a week to fully restore and, together with the current severe heat wave, could create crisis situations for the elderly, young children and those with sensitive medical conditions.

Red Cross Opens Emergency Shelter and Cooling Station in Marion

In response to storms of June 29th, the Marion County Chapter of the American Red Cross has opened an emergency shelter and cooling station at the Chapter located at 1849 Summerset Dr. in Marion.  The shelter and cooling station opened at 1:00 p.m. Saturday and will remain open until further notice.  Persons wishing to use the facility are asked to call the Chapter prior to arriving at 740-725-9141.

With heat and humidity on the rise, the Ohio Department of Health and Ohio Emergency Management Agency urge residents to use extra care to avoid heat-related illness over the next several days. They say you should remember that even short periods of high temperatures can cause serious health problems.

Winds Knock Over Semis, Barns, Cause Two Deaths

Winds reaching 70 mph knocked over three barns being renovated Wednesday at the state's largest egg farm, killing two workers, authorities said. Strong winds also blew down a 10-foot-high brick wall at a school construction site in Edgerton, near the Ohio-Indiana state line, killing a worker, and knocked three semitrailers onto their sides on U.S. 23 south of Marion.

Giant Ohio Jesus Statue Destroyed by Lightening

A six-story-tall statue of Jesus Christ with his arms raised along a highway was struck by lightning in a thunderstorm Monday night and burned to the ground, police said.

Strength Upgraded for Tornado that Killed 5

Weather experts now believe the weekend tornado that killed five people in northwest Ohio was stronger than first thought, with winds up to 175 mph.

The latest National Weather Service estimate puts the tornado at a 4 on the 0-5 scale for rating tornadoes, with 5 being the most intense.
