Statewide Unemployment Down Slightly

Ohio's unemployment rate was 10.5 percent in June, down slightly from 10.7 percent in May, according to data released by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

"Ohio’s unemployment rate decreased to 10.5 percent in June as the number of Ohioans in the labor force declined," ODJFS Director Douglas Lumpkin said. "Job losses among temporary census workers offset a moderate increase in private sector employment."

The number of workers unemployed in Ohio in June was 625,000, down from 641,000 in May. The number of unemployed has decreased by 5,000 in the past 12 months from 630,000. The June unemployment rate for Ohio was unchanged from June 2009.

The U.S. unemployment rate for June was 9.5 percent, down from 9.7 percent in May.

Ohio’s nonfarm payroll employment, at 5,048,900 in June, was down 1,500 from May, according to the latest business establishment survey conducted by ODJFS. The decrease includes a reduction in government employment of 10,400 which were mostly temporary census workers.

Employment gains were posted in leisure and hospitality (+4,500), financial activities (+2,000), professional and business services (+1,700), trade, transportation, and utilities (+1,200), and other services (+200). Goods-producing industries, at 810,100, advanced 400. An increase in nondurable goods exceeded a reduction in durable goods to add 300 jobs to manufacturing.
